NYSCRC Welcomes Newest Addition to the AmeriCorps Seniors Demonstration Program |
We are pleased to welcome new Program Assistant Alex Borgella to the AmeriCorps Seniors Demonstration Program.
Alex is an Ithaca-area native who graduated from the State University of New York at Buffalo with a BA in Psychology. He has worked as a team leader and COVID-19 contact tracer for the Tompkins County Health Department. His organizational and interpersonal skills will be a great asset as we work to build respite capacity in New York State. |
A new AmeriCorps Seniors program in Central New York aims to build respite in Jefferson, Lewis, Oneida, Herkimer, Cortland and Tompkins counties. There are opportunities for volunteers to give caregivers a break and for local organizations to aid in this effort by becoming volunteer stations.
Assignments can include providing companionship, homemaking assistance, and personal care. Volunteers must be aged 55+ and most will quality for a $4/hour stipend. Free training is provided. Local organizations from area agencies on aging to libraries to developmental disability service centers sign up to become the local point of contact. Volunteers are managed at the local “station” in partnership with AmeriCorps Seniors project staff. If volunteers become interested in starting a respite business or charting a career path from this experience, they’re connected with a workforce development career coach. Questions? Suggestions? Is your organization interested in becoming a volunteer station? Do you have existing volunteers who might be interested in this program? Contact Lisa Richards, Project Director

The Biden Administration Moves to Support Caregivers |
President Biden recently signed an executive order (EO) that includes more than 50 directives to federal agencies to increase access to affordable, high-quality care, and provide support for care workers and family caregivers.
According to the Administration for Community Living (ACL), the EO directs actions to improve job quality for the professionals who provide the critical services that make community living possible for millions of people. It includes actions to improve support for the 53 million family caregivers who provide the overwhelming majority of long-term support to older adults and people with disabilities. It also directs actions to expand availability of home and community-based services, including those funded by Medicaid and the Department of Veterans Affairs.
This exciting EO creates new momentum for ACL’s work to strengthen the care infrastructure that helps people with disabilities and older adults live and fully participate in their communities, including our work leading the National Strategy to Support Family Caregivers and to strengthen and expand the direct care workforce, our partnership with the Veterans Health Administration on the Veteran-Directed Care program, and more.
