Caregiving-Related Work Productivity Loss Among Employed Family and Other Unpaid Caregivers of Older Adults Maningbè B. Keita Fakeye, Laura J. Samuel, Emmanuel F. Drabo, Karen Bandeen-Roche, Jennifer L. Wolff, Value in Health, published online August 13, 2022
Little is known about short-term work impacts of caregiving using measures of both missed work time and reduced productivity while at work. The authors quantify the prevalence and financial costs of caregiving-related work productivity loss. They found that nearly 1in 4 employed caregivers missed work or experienced productivity loss while at work over a 1-month period because of caregiving. Among those affected, caregiving reduced work productivity by one-third on average—an estimated $5600. The study reveals a hidden economic consequence of caregiving. Shortages in the paid long-term care workforce and the impact of COVID-19, which has reduced employment resources and increased caregiving demands, heightens the urgency of stronger supports for employed family caregivers.
