Respite Vouchers Available for Caregivers!
|
Thanks to a grant from the Field Hall Foundation, we are currently offering $600 respite vouchers to caregivers of older adults in Putnam, Dutchess, and Westchester Counties. Caregivers in those counties who are themselves over the age of 60 and caring for a child that is not their own may also apply.
NYSCRC's statewide voucher program is not accepting applications at this time. We hope to resume in the fall. Look for updates about the statewide program in forthcoming newsletters.
For more information about our voucher programs or to apply for a Putnam, Dutchess, or Westchester County voucher, please reach out to Rebecca Hyde at rhyde@lifespan-roch.org or by calling 585-287-6391. |

Being a Caregiver: devotion, compassion, affection... exhaustion |
If you've ever been a family caregiver, or know someone who is, then you clearly recognize there comes a time when caregivers simply need a break. Without some form of respite, caregivers often suffer from burnout, leading to feelings of fatigue, depression, sleeplessness, and more.
Read one caregiver's story, it's likely the same story many can tell. |
Becky Preve, executive director of the Association on Aging in New York, shared these staggering statistics during NYSCRC's statewide conference last month. |
- Employed Caregivers: 32% of workforce, providing over
22 hours per week of care
-
61% of caregivers worry about caring for a family member, friend, or neighbor
- 55% don’t self-identify as caregivers
- 50% use food to cope and reduce stress
- 33% use substances to cope vs. 6% of general population
- 31% contemplated suicide vs. 3% of general population
- 49% of working caregivers report arriving to work late, leaving early or taking time off
- 15% have taken a leave of absence, 14% switched from full-time to part-time, 10% left the workforce completely

Caregivers and their families are rarely prepared for the emotional roller coaster and communication challenges of the caregiving experience. Family mediation and individual conflict coaching can help with planning, conflict resolution, and improved management of the interpersonal issues that arise.
Lifespan Certified Mediator Mary Berk writes, "I am often contacted by providers asking if a situation is appropriate for mediation or whether coaching is an option for a client. Since both mediation and coaching are voluntary and confidential, my feeling is that if people are open to resolving problems, then a conversation is always appropriate."
