The New York State Caregiving and Respite Coalition (NYSCRC) managed by Lifespan of Greater Rochester Inc. has been awarded a three-year Senior Demonstration Project grant to recruit, train and place AmeriCorps Senior volunteers as respite providers with caregivers across the age and disability spectrums in central New York State. The target counties include Lewis, Oneida, Herkimer, Cortland, Tompkins, and Jefferson. The primary focus of this project is Economic Opportunity/Workforce Development and Aging in Place/Respite.
AmeriCorps Seniors will be matched with local organizations that provide respite. Additionally, they will have an opportunity to move from volunteer work into the paid workforce. The overall goal of the project is to increase access to respite in the region.

NYSCRC MINI GRANT Awardees - Congratulations!
As part of the Lifespan Respite Initiative, NYSCRC made funds available for Mini-Grants specifically for the development or expansion of volunteer-based respite programs in New York State. We look forward to these collaborations with with past grantees and new.
InterFaith Works serves Onondaga, Cayuga, Oswego and Madison counties. Funds will be used to support the AmeriCorps Senior Companion Program to increase home-based respite.
Tompkins County Office for the Aging is partnering with Ithaca College to develop a student-based respite program.
Colonie Seniors serves Albany and Schenectady Counties. Funds will be used for continued support for the Bright Horizons Program and to integrate home-delivered meals into Colonie's respite program.
Community Caregivers serves Albany and Rensselaer counties. Funds will be used for expansion of its volunteer-based matching program for respite purposes.
The Noyes Caregiver Resource Center serves Livingston County. Funding will be used to support the well-established "Home Away From Home" drop-in respite program, formerly managed by SUNY Geneseo. SUNY Geneseo students continue to serve as program volunteers and plan activities. "Home Away From Home" was awarded the ARCH National Respite Exemplary Award in 2021 under the leadership of Sharon Leary.
West Falls Center for the Arts serves Erie, Niagara, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, and Allegany counties. Funding will be used to support the expansion of the Musical Memories Café.

NYSCRC Legislative Advocacy Committee - seeking new members!
NYSCRC is seeking professionals and CAREGIVERS interested in: Sharing your caregiving story with legislators and policy makers. Educating and advocating for support for caregivers. Networking and partnering with NYS organizations to support policy agendas.
Developing an annual advocacy agenda and strategic legislative action plan for NYSCRC Training will be provided
The NYSCRC Advisory Committee is also seeking general members interested in supporting the mission of NYSCRC. In partnership with NYS Office for the Aging, we seek to develop a sustainable system of respite care throughout the state.

We can pay for respite Respite Voucher Program
Respite Vouchers are available for informal kinship caregivers and caregivers of people with chronic conditions of ALL ages. This is a Caregiver Directed Program allowing caregivers to hire providers of their choice and choose when respite is delivered.

Just Released! The First Ever National Strategy to Support Family Caregivers
The National Alliance for Caregiving – a coalition of 67 national organizations – applauds the release of the 2022 National Strategy to Support Family Caregivers developed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, but urges strong accountability and implementation efforts to turn the strategy into action.
The strategy details more than 350 federal actions and 150 measures that state and local governments, public health departments, philanthropies, and community-based, faith-based, and nonprofit organizations can take immediately to support the nation’s 53 million family caregivers, who make up 21% of the population. As part of the World Carers Conversation 2022, NAC worked with Chief Story Officer Anne Levy and caregivers from around the globe to help them tell their own story through a series of photos. These photos addressed simple questions about being a caregiver, such as what works, what doesn’t work, and what a world that embraces and supports caregivers would look like. Each one of these stories is unique to the caregiver’s own experience and tells a diverse story of what it’s like to care for others, an act which connects us.
